Balgera

VALTELLINA – Via M. Quadrio, 26 – Chiuro (SO) – Balgera is one of the oldest wineries in Valtellina. The history of the winery is the history of the Balgera family. Historical evidence attests that the ancestors of the family produced and traded wine as far back as 1885, while Umberto I of Savoy reigned over the newly formed Italy.

Within the production area of the Valtellina Superiore DOCG wine, the sub-zones Maroggia, Sassella, Grumello, Inferno, Valgella are identified. The minimum period of refinement of the Valtellina Superiore DOCG is twenty-four months, of which at least twelve in wooden barrels. Wines can carry the qualification “riserva” if subjected to an aging period of at least three years. Steep and terraced vineyards, source of the best grapes, require processing almost entirely by hand, hence the wording Eroica Valtellina.

The 5 sub-zones are: Maroggia, Sassella, Grumello, Inferno and Valgella, both the Riserva qualification and further additional geographical references.
