Wines of the Marche wineries are among the most famous wines in Italy.
The Marche has a very varied territory, 70% hilly and 30% mountainous. The Marche region, located in the central part of Italy along the Adriatic Sea, has a particularly varied territory that extends from the coasts to the Apennine reliefs. This diversity of landscapes significantly influences the viticulture of the Marche, which benefits from this territorial and climatic complexity, resulting in a production of high-quality and strongly characterized wines. Marche wine tasting
The first traces of viticulture in the Marche date back to the 10th century BC, in the current area of the Rosso PicenoDOC, imported by the Greek colonists who founded the city of Ancona and also among the Piceni, between the 8th and 7th centuries BC. Modernization began in the post-war period with the planting of high-quality vines in the hilly areas of Jesi, Cupramontana and the Colli Piceni, the quality of which was officially recognized starting in the 1962s with the application of the regulations on the legal protection of the Controlled Designations of Origin.
Designations for wine in the Marche
Designations of origin for wine in the Marche: 5 DOCG, 15 DOC, 1 IGT.
The vines grown in the Marche are 60% white grapes (especially Verdicchio). Verdicchio is today among the most interesting native white grapes in Italy, capable of producing complex and well-structured wines. Among the black grapes, the most important are Montepulciano and Sangiovese.
In the Marche there are also native vines such as Lacrima, a black grape characterized by a very original aromatic component and Vernaccia nera. Chardonnay, Ciliegiolo, Passerina, Pecorino, Trebbiano toscano and Malvasia bianca lunga are also grown.
The Wine Areas where to do a Marche Wine Tasting
The production in the Marche is widespread throughout the region, which can be divided into 3 main cultivation areas, to which are added others, less extensive but no less important from a production point of view.
Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi and Matelica Verdicchio
Certainly the most famous grape of the Marche, is the absolute protagonist of the areas of Castelli di Jesi and Matelica. The DOC of Verdicchio Castelli di Jesi provides for the definition of the classic area, that is, the most typical and traditional, while the Riserva typology, together with Verdicchio di Matelica, boasts the DOCG. Verdicchio is an extremely versatile grape and in addition to the production of dry wines, it is also used for passito and sparkling wines.
Rosso Conero and Rosso Piceno
Red wine in the Marche region means above all Montepulciano and Sangiovese. Rosso Conero obtained the DOCG in the reserve version (Conero DOCG) in 2004. The Rosso Conero area benefits from the influence of sea breezes, which together with the calcareous composition of the soil allow for the production of a unique red wine.
Rosso Piceno is instead produced further south in a rather vast area that reaches the borders of the province of Pesaro. Montepulciano is present for at least 85% in both wines.
Vernaccia di Serrapretrona
Vernaccia di Serrapetrona wine is a red sparkling wine produced in dry and sweet versions, using a rather particular system. In fact, after the harvest, a part of the grapes are vinified in red, while a part is left to dry in order to concentrate the quantity of sugars. The dried grapes are then pressed and the must is added to the first wine, causing a second fermentation. The sparkling process of Vernaccia di Serrapetrona with the Charmat method gives the wine its characteristic pink foam and its unmistakable aromas.
