In the province of Lucca, there are two DOC denominations: Colline Lucchesi DOC and Montecarlo DOC, as well as the IGT (Costa Toscana IGT) and Toscano or Toscana IGT, which are shared, respectively, with the other coastal provinces and with all the provinces in the region where Lucca wine tasting is available. The most important grape varieties grown in the province of Lucca are Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, and Canaiolo among the red grapes, and Greco, Grechetto, Vermentino, and Malvasia del Chianti among the white grapes.
The Colline Lucchesi DOC
includes white and red wines made from blends and single-varietal grapes grown locally.
The Montecarlo DOC
Famous for its wines since ancient times, it produces white wines, including from French grape varieties such as Roussane, Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Blanc, which have been present in these areas since the 19th century. Among the red grape varieties, Sangiovese is the most important, alongside Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. The denomination also includes Vin Santo, made from Trebbiano Toscano and other varieties, and Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice, made from Sangiovese and other varieties.
The IGT (Regional Geographical Indications) of the province of Lucca include both still and sparkling wines, including late harvest and passito wines, produced with grape varieties authorized for cultivation in the Tuscany region.
