Wine tasting Siena

The province of Siena is home to some of Tuscany’s most prestigious DOCG and DOC denominations. Here, you can enjoy wine tasting Siena . The province of Siena is especially famous for producing three red wines: Chianti Since September 24, 1716, when Grand Duke Cosimo III issued the famous proclamation that defined the boundaries of the Chianti area, it has become one of Tuscany’s most important wine regions. Baron Bettino Ricasoli’s original formula for Chianti was 70% Sangioveto (Sangiovese), 15% Canaiolo Nero, 15% Malvasia Bianca, and Trebbiano Toscano.

Today, most producers opt for pure Sangiovese or blended with varying amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Merlot. However, there are still those who adhere to the Baron’s ancient recipe. The Gallo Nero Consortium was founded in 1924, and in 1932, an Italian government decree identified the area that would later give rise to the Chianti Classico DOCG designation, in the territory between the provinces of Florence to the north and Siena to the south. Three types of the designation are Chianti Classico, Riserva, and Gran Selezione.

The Chianti DOCG comprises seven subzones, encompassing seven provinces in central Tuscany, one of which, Chianti Colli Senesi, is dedicated to the province of Siena, with a Chianti produced with Sangiovese grapes and no more than 25% other varietals.

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG

One of the first wines to obtain DOC status and the first to achieve DOCG status, in 1980. It is produced solely in the municipality of Montalcino, using only Sangiovese grosso grapes, known locally as “Brunello” for the particularly dark color of its grapes. Before being released for sale, the wine must undergo a long period of maturation and aging, including at least two years in oak containers of any size and at least four months in the bottle.

The wine cannot be released for consumption before January 1st, five years after the harvest.

The Rosso di Montalcino DOC

designation, on the other hand, is dedicated to a wine produced from the same grapes and in the same terroir, but with less stringent production regulations and a much shorter aging period. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano The name “nobile” appears to derive from the fact that its production, in a small hilly area of the municipality of Montepulciano, was carried out by local noble families.

The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG

designation was established in 1980. It is made using only Sangiovese and Canaiolo Nero grapes, with the possible addition of other local varietals authorized for cultivation in the province of Siena. The wine must be aged in wood for at least two years, starting January 1st following the harvest.

Rosso di Montepulciano DOC

is its successor designation, dedicated to wines produced from the same grapes and in the same area, but with less stringent production regulations and shorter aging periods. Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG is the most famous Tuscan white wine. The wine is made from at least 85% Vernaccia di San Gimignano grapes. The production area includes the hilly terrain of the municipality of San Gimignano in the province of Siena. Vernaccia di San Gimignano was the first Italian wine to receive the DOC designation in 1966. San Gimignano DOC is its successor designation, dedicated primarily to wines produced from international red grape varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet, Syrah, and Pinot Noir. The designation covers six red wines (including the Riserva label), one rosé, and two vinsanto.
