Wine growing in the San Gimignano area dates back to the Etruscan era, of which there is extensive archaeological evidence, but the Vernaccia grape variety was introduced to the San Gimignano area during the 12th century by Vieri de’ Bardi. The San Gimignano DOC production area falls entirely within the municipality of San Gimignano, in the northwest part of the province of Siena. It is a hilly area located between 67 and 629 meters above sea level. The San Gimignano DOC is made from international red grape varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet, Syrah, and Pinot Noir, and expands on traditional winemaking techniques with the use of wooden containers of various capacities. The San Gimignano DOC designation refers to six red wines (including Riserva), one rosé, and two Vin Santo. Vernaccia di San Gimignano is a DOCG white wine originating from the province of Siena.
It is produced in the municipality of San Gimignano with grapes from the native grape of the same name, typical of this area located in the Siena hills.
