The most important appellation in the province of Pistoia is Chianti DOCG, specifically represented by the “Montalbano” subzone, where you can enjoy wine tasting Pistoia . The most important grape variety grown in the province of Pisa is Sangiovese, along with Ciliegiolo, Canaiolo Nero, Malvasia Nera, and Trebbiano Toscano.
This is complemented by the corresponding subzone of Vin Santo del Chianti DOC, whose basic styles are made from Trebbiano Toscano, Malvasia Bianca Lunga, and “Occhio di Pernice” grapes, with a minimum of 50% Sangiovese.
The Colli dell’Etruria Centrale DOC appellation covers the provinces of Arezzo, Florence, Prato, and Siena, in addition to the province of Pistoia. The Colli dell’Etruria Centrale DOC was introduced as a subzone for the Chianti DOCG, allowing greater production freedom for the area’s wines. As such, the Colli dell’Etruria Centrale DOC could be considered a younger sibling of Chianti.
The appellation includes a fairly wide range of red, rosé, white, and novello wines. The reds and rosés are made from a 50% Sangiovese base, and the whites are made from a 50% Trebbiano Toscano base. This use of Tuscany’s two most important grape varieties confirms their place in the region’s winemaking tradition, complemented by Canaiolo Nero.
The grape varieties used to make the other 50% of the blends are international, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Gamay. The regional denomination Toscano or Toscana IGT encompasses all the permitted wine types using grape varieties authorized for cultivation in the Tuscany region.
