The province’s most representative designation of origin is Chianti DOCG, with the “Colline Pisane” subzone and its Superiore and Riserva versions, where you can enjoy wine tasting Pisa. This is complemented by the corresponding subzone of Vin Santo del Chianti DOC, in its basic versions, made from Trebbiano Toscano, Malvasia Bianca Lunga, and “Occhio di Pernice” grapes, with a minimum of 50% Sangiovese.
The most important grape variety grown in the province of Pisa is Sangiovese
along with Ciliegiolo, Canaiolo Nero, Malvasia Nera, and Trebbiano Toscano. The designation’s area includes the municipalities of San Miniato, Monopoli, Fauglia, Lorenzana, Crespina, Palaia, Lajatico, Chianni, Peccioli, Terricciola, Capannoli, Lari, Casciana Terme, Santa Luce, and Pontedera.
The Colli dell’Etruria Centrale DOC is also found in the same area, with both white and red wines. Here too, the most important grape variety is Sangiovese, which accounts for at least 50% of the total red wine, along with other authorized varieties for the Tuscany Region. The San Torpé DOC produces a fresh, youthful wine, made from Trebbiano Toscano along with other white grape varieties. The denomination also includes the “Vin Santo” type.

Among the white grapes, Vermentino is also grown, along with Chardonnay and Sauvignon.
The Val di Cornia DOC, shared with the province of Livorno, in the province of Pisa, includes only the municipality of Monteverdi Marittimo, with its wines made from local and international grape varieties, whose cultivation benefits from the proximity to the sea. In the province of Pisa, the IGT wines or “Indicazione Geografica Tipica” of the Costa Toscana IGT and Toscano or Toscana IGT denominations include a wide variety of typologies, including the so-called “Supertuscans,” wines that have great structure and longevity, aged in small barrels (barriques) or large barrels (tonneaux) for over 24 months.
