Wine tasting Colli Orientali

The DOC Friuli Colli Orientali extends over an area that includes nineteen municipalities in the central eastern part of the Province of Udine, near the border with the Republic of Slovenia where you can do Wine Tasting Colli Orientali . The soils of the Colli Orientali are made up of alternating layers of marl (calcareous clay) and sandstone (calcified sand), called ponca in Friulian. Easy erodibility of the predominantly marly soils has led to a rather gentle morphology of the land with heights below 200 m above sea level. The winemakers were forced to terrace the hills to avoid the “consumption” of the hills and the undermining of the vines and these terraces have thus become a characteristic of the Colli Orientali del Friuli.

The Colli Orientali del Friuli

have always been a land of wines: from Roman times to that of the Lombard Duchy. It is in the Colli Orientali del Friuli that the idea of the Friulian “Superwhites” was born, well suited to a denomination that has twelve types of white wines. To these are added eleven types of red wines with ten indicating the grape variety plus “rosso”. All these types can be accompanied by the mention riserva if appropriately aged.

The list of grape varieties from which these types arise establishes a perfect balance between white grape varieties and black grape varieties, between the international varieties and the native ones which are nine out of twenty.

Colli Orientali del Friuli territory gives white wines a straw yellow color with more or less greenish or golden reflections, or in the case of Pinot Grigio a more or less accentuated copper reflection. The structure of Colli Orientali wines also allows for long aging over time.

The Friuli Colli Orientali

controlled designation of origin includes five subzones called respectively: Cialla, Pignolo di Rosazzo, Ribolla gialla di Rosazzo, Schioppettino di Prepotto and Refosco di Faedis. The Cialla subzone includes a part of the municipality of Prepotto and gives rise to 6 wines, 4 of which with the indication of the grape variety: Ribolla gialla. Verduzzo friulano, Schioppettino, Refosco dal peduncolo rosso, plus the Bianco and the Rosso.

Pignolo di Rosazzo and Ribolla gialla di Rosazzo subzones fall within a small area between the municipalities of Corno di Rosazzo. Manzano and San Giovanni al Natisone. Two wines are produced there from native vines, Pignolo and Ribolla gialla respectively.
Pignolo is undoubtedly the most aristocratic of the wines of the denomination, with a marked propensity for long aging. The polyphenolic concentration and that of the tannins, together with the high alcohol concentration, blend into a whole that allows it to last over time. Even reaching ten years of life with products that still express themselves at the highest levels.

Schioppettino di Prepotto is characterized by a single wine that has found one of its maximum expressions for which the riserva typology is also contemplated. Finally, the Refosco di Faedis is a sub-area characterized by the production of the Refosco nostrano vine and includes the municipalities of Faedis and Torreano, Attimis, Nimis, Povoletto and Tarcento. The mention “riserva” is also foreseen for this typology.
