Prato Wineries

The most important wine producing area in the province of Prato is Carmignano, where you can enjoy wine tasting in Prato Wineries. Wine has been produced in this area since Etruscan and Roman times, and vine cultivation has continued over the centuries to this day.

The quality and distinctive characteristics of Carmignano wine were first officially recognized with the proclamation of 1716 by the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo III de’ Medici, who clearly and unequivocally established the boundaries of the Carmignano wine production district. The Carmignano area is, in fact, particularly suited to grape growing, thanks to its adequately ventilated and bright environment, which is conducive to all the vegetative and productive functions of the plant.

Carmignano DOCG

is the most important designation of origin, reserved for still red wine, available in both basic and reserve versions, made from Sangiovese grapes (min. 50%), Canaiolo Nero (max. 20%), Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon (10-20%), and a possible addition of white grapes (max. 10%) from Trebbiano Toscano, Canaiolo Bianco, and Malvasia del Chianti.

The production area corresponds to the hilly terrain of the municipalities of Carmignano and Poggio a Caiano in the province of Prato. It is a structured yet elegant and harmonious red wine suitable for aging, with a fine and intense bouquet.

The Barco Reale di Carmignano DOC, which takes its name from the Medici hunting reserve (“barco” means “park”), is the subsidiary designation for the Carmignano DOCG. The permitted yield per hectare is higher than that of the DOCG, and aging in wood is not mandatory. It is therefore a high-quality wine, but not necessarily as structured and generally has a slightly lower alcohol content, often a result of harvest decisions regarding both the timing of the harvest and the selection of the grapes. Barco Reale is also available as a rosé.

The province of Prato also produces the Chianti DOCG, Vin Santo del Chianti DOC, Colli dell’Etruria Centrale DOC (which can be considered a subsidiary DOC for the Chianti DOCG), and the IGT Toscano (or Toscana) and Colli della Toscana Centrale.
