Livorno Wineries

The province of Livorno has 3 DOCG, 5 DOC, and 2 IGT designations. Here, you can enjoy wine tasting in Livorno Wineries. first DOCG is Elba Aleatico Passito or Aleatico Passito dell’Elba DOCG, reserved for wines produced with 100% Aleatico grapes on the island of Elba (Livorno).

The high temperatures and sunny climate in September led to the practice of drying the grapes in the sun for a short period (10-20 days), typical of viticulture on the Mediterranean islands.

The Rosso della Val di Cornia DOCG

is reserved for red wines produced from Sangiovese grapes (minimum 40%), Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot up to a maximum of 60%, with other red grape varieties authorized for the Tuscany region up to a maximum of 20%. It includes the basic and reserve versions. The Riserva requires a minimum aging of 3 years, including at least 18 months in wooden barrels.

The Suvereto DOCG

includes the basic wines from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in varying proportions; Sangiovese, from Sangiovese grapes at least 85%; Merlot, from Merlot grapes at least 85%; and Cabernet Sauvignon, from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes at least 85%. The production area includes the entire territory of the municipality of Suvereto, in the province of Livorno (Tuscany).

The Bolgheri DOC includes

wines from both white and red grape varieties, primarily Sangiovese, Vermentino, and Trebbiano Toscano, along with Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Sauvignon.

Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC is located in a production area boasting aspects and characteristics of much of the land designated for vineyards that differentiate it from the rest of Bolgheri and make it particularly suited to the production of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes.

The grape varieties were chosen not only for the characteristics of the terroir, but above all based on French winemaking culture, with particular attention to the winemaking methods and grape varieties used in France. The official recognition of Sassicaia wine came in 1978 when Decanter magazine published a comparative tasting of Cabernets from around the world, and Sassicaia took first place. But Sassicaia did not remain an isolated phenomenon; starting in the 1980s, it was joined by numerous other wines from famous wineries that garnered a wealth of awards.

The Terratico di Bibbona DOC

was introduced in 2006 to include red, rosé, and white wines from the coastal plains and hills south and east of Livorno. Terratico is an ancient Tuscan word referring to an ancient form of land taxation or rent, and its use had more to do with olive growing than wine production.

Bibbona is the name of a municipality in the southern part of the appellation’s production area. Terratico di Bibbona Rosso is made with a blend of Merlot and Sangiovese. The rosé is also produced from this blend. Terratico di Bibbona Bianco is based on a minimum of 50% Vermentino grapes.

The two IGTs in the province of Livorno are Costa Toscana IGT and Toscano or Toscana IGT. The former is shared with the coastal provinces, the latter with all other provinces in the Tuscany region. These wines include wines produced with the grape varieties authorized for cultivation in the Tuscany region, either as a blend or as a single varietal.
