Firenze Wineries

The province of Florence is home to many of Tuscany’s most important designations of origin, where you can enjoy wine tasting in Firenze Wineries. Regarding the DOCGs, the province of Florence primarily includes Chianti Classico DOCG and Chianti DOCG. Chianti Colli Fiorentini, Chianti Rufina, Chianti Montespertoli, and Montalbano, the latter shared with the province of Pistoia.

The province of Florence also includes part of the Colli dell’Etruria Centrale DOC appellation, shared with the provinces of Arezzo, Pistoia, Pisa, Prato, and Siena, in an area roughly corresponding to that of the Chianti DOCG, of which it is therefore the DOC’s successor. It offers a broader range of wines and less stringent yield and aging requirements than the corresponding DOCG.

Also in the province of Florence, the Pomino DOC is characterized by French grape varieties from Burgundy, imported to the area starting in 1855 with the aim of producing the “Chablis di Pomino.” The grape varieties eligible for production under the appellation are Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon, and Trebbiano for white wines, and Sangiovese, Pinot Nero, and Merlot for red wines. Bianco dell’Empolese DOC refers to two wines, white and Vin Santo, produced in the appellation area, also located in the province of Florence, and both based on the Trebbiano Toscano grape.

Turning to the IGT designations in the province of Florence

the first is the Alta Valle della Greve IGT, which includes the ideal lands between the Val di Pesa and the Greve River, up to its source. The white, red, and rosé wines are produced from the area’s characteristic grape varieties, authorized for cultivation in the Tuscany region. Similar wines fall under the Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT designation, which is shared with the provinces of Arezzo, Pistoia, Prato, and Siena. Finally, the Toscana IGT designation encompasses all permitted wine styles using grape varieties authorized for cultivation in the Tuscany region.
